to Brisbane! 


THEATRE OF THUNDER with the support of the Brisbane and Melbourne Butoh network, is proud to be hosting 
internationally renowned Butoh teacher / dancer / choreographer KAN KATSURA and his co-dancer and assistant DU DU, in Brisbane 2016. 

 


The KAN san and DU Brisbane tour will encompass an exciting two week programme providing the opportunity for multi faceted involvement, 
inviting Australia wide experienced butoh artists and those new to butoh. 

'Kan Katsura, a native of Kyoto, is a master butoh artist from among the ranks of Japan's first generation butoh innovators. He performed with the seminal Butoh troupe, "Byakosha" from 1979 - 1981 before beginning his own research in Indonesia and Thailand for many years. He is a celebrated solo and collaborative performer as well as choreographer. Kan has worked with what he calls "minority dancers" all over the world, in remote locations in Africa, Europe and South East Asia, in addition to creating works in more cosmopolitan cultures. Currently he is researching "Beckett BUTOH Notation" in France and "Oracle and Enigma" as a Dance Oratorio project in San Francisco'. 


THE PROGRAMME: 

1. PUBLIC LECTURE : $20 

-THURSDAY 27 Oct 6-8pm
(free for workshop participants) 
Kan will speak about his perspective on Contemporary BUTOH including a table talk with Australian Butoh pioneers and the young generation to discuss the NOW, HERE and PAST of BUTOH; including Q&A. 



2. WEEKEND WORKSHOP : $250

-FRIDAY 28th : 6-9 pm 
-SATURDAY 29th : 12-5 pm 
-SUNDAY 30th : 12-5 pm 

In the workshop KAN san will guide 
the way into Butoh with a 
-Thorough warm up for the body.... 
-Exploring the 'curious body' through group observation of daily life. 
Kan will introduce his unique 
-'Butoh Notation' method.. 
Guide participants in how to 
-"Awaken your noise", to
-"Feel and carry the space" and
-"Focus on the other side of reality"

Participants joining the workshop will be given the opportunity to embody essential elements of BUTOH.... discovering ways butoh can inform and transform one's personal movement / performative practice. 



3. MASTER CLASS : $250 

-TUESDAY 1st : 6-9pm 
-WEDNESDAY 2nd : 6-9pm 
-THURSDAY 3rd : 6-9pm 
-FRIDAY 4th : 6-9 pm

-A deepening and evolving of the process initiated in the weekend workshop.. 
-Embodying Butoh-fu / notation. 
-Developing methods to devise Butoh performance... 

Suitable for those with some experience in Butoh or have previously joined the weekend workshop. 



4. STUDENT MASTER CLASS PERFORMANCE: $15 

-SATURDAY 5th : 
afternoon / evening 
An option! for Master Class students to offer a performance with other students based on the workshop material and process. 



5. PERFORMANCE PROCESS : 

-SUNDAY 6th - Sunday 13th 
KAN & DU will guide 10 butoh dancers into a performance process
culminating in a final performance season. 



6. PUBLIC PERFORMANCE SEASON: 'CURIOUS FISH' : $30 

-FRIDAY 11th : 7.30 pm
